Rapid Profiling of an Evolving Bed Form Using Planar Laser Sheet Illumination

چکیده
Traditional methods of measuring the profile of a scour hole or bed form have poor temporal resolution and may require the temporary cessation of the flow in order to be executed. These are undesirable characteristics since many hydraulic flows have unsteady water-sediment interfaces that can display considerable differences between their “dynamic” flow on and “static” flow off states. The present technical note discusses the application of planar laser sheet illumination to the erosion of a cohesionless granular bed due to a planar turbulent wall jet. The measurements allow for the quantitative study of the evolution of the bed in its earliest stages. In some cases an ephemeral bed form is observed to form prior to the development of the main bed form. Additionally, the measurements illustrate the oscillatory nature of the bed form under certain conditions. The experiments therefore demonstrate the great potential of this experimental technique for gaining previously inaccessible information on scour processes. Application of structured illumination for multiple scattering suppression in planar laser imaging of dense sprays.
A novel approach to reduce the multiple light scattering contribution in planar laser images of atomizing sprays is reported. This new technique, named Structured Laser Illumination Planar Imaging (SLIPI), has been demonstrated in the dense region of a hollow-cone water spray generated in ambient air at 50 bars injection pressure. The idea is based on using an incident laser sheet which is spat...

In this paper, the self-focusing property of an intense circularly polarized laser pulse in hot magnetized plasma is investigated theoretically. First, an envelope equation governing the spot-size of the laser beam for both left- and right-hand polarizations has been derived in the presence of a planar wiggler. Furthermore, non-linear dispersion relation of laser pulse is obtained by using Maxw...

In this paper instability of planar anisotropic sheet metal during a few forming processes is investigated for the first time. For this reason components of the constitutive tangent tensor for planar anisotropic sheets are developed. By using the above tensor location of necking is predicted. Direction of the shear band is also predicted using the acoustic tensor. A finite element program is pr...
متن کاملSingle camera three component planar velocity measurements, using two frequency Planar Doppler Velocimetry (2ν-PDV)
The work presented here describes a method that allows three component velocity measurements to be made, quickly and non-intrusively, across a plane in a flow defined by a laser light sheet. The method, two frequency planar Doppler Velocimetry (2ν-PDV) is a modification of the Planar Doppler Velocimetry (PDV) technique, using only a single CCD camera, and sequential illumination of the flow usi...
متن کاملSingle camera 3D planar Doppler velocity measurements, using two frequency Planar Doppler Velocimetry (2ν-PDV) and imaging fibre bundles
A modified Planar Doppler Velocimetry (PDV) technique, two frequency PDV (2-PDV), is described that allows measurements of the velocity field over a plane defined by a laser light sheet using sequential illumination of the flow with two closely separated (~1GHz) frequencies of laser light. This allows a common-path imaging head to be used containing a single CCD camera instead of the usual cam...
